Another ficlette. We're still in 1991, though I don't think we'll stay there much longer. Table is here.
1991
That Monday, as she walked into the cafeteria, Andy prepared herself for being ignored. Even though Jess has seemed sincere when they were alone, being among 'normal' girls tended to change things like that. At least that had been experience so far with the few other friends she'd had.
So she was pleasantly surprised when a snow-white hand shot up above the heads of the other girls, and Jess—wrapped in a black-and-white striped sweater that was just a bit too tight—smiled at her.
“Andy! Over here!”
Andy tried her hardest not to smile as she walked over, but knew she was beaming as she sat down.
“Hey Jess,” she croaked. “Sorry I didn't see you.”
Jess just rolled her eyes and smiled the tiniest bit. “You're weird, you know that?” Then, as Andy bit into her roast beef-and-cheese, Jess reached out and stroked her fingers against the tiny wisps of hair that always fell along the side of Andy's face no matter how much gel she used or how short she cut it.
“But I like weird.” she whispered.
Andy jumped a little, involuntarily, at the touch. This caused a tiny bit of bread to slide down the wrong tube and she started coughing. Her eyes were closed, so she didn't see Jess' expression, but she did feel the tiny hand running up and down her back. Finally, she was able to swallow and breathe again.
“I-I'm okay.” she choked out when she realized Jess was still hovering behind her.
“Jesus, you really scared me there.” Jess exclaimed, idly running her hand against Andy's spine., “Yeah?” Andy forced a laugh. “Well, you scared me too.”
“Oh.” Jess said quietly, sounding just the tiniest bit defeated. “I'm sorry. I just-I thought-I mean, not just because everyone said it, but I thought you liked-oh, never mind!” she all but huffed as she turned, looking to head back to the other side of the table or out of the cafeteria all together.
Before she even realized what she was doing, Andy grabbed Jess' hand.
Jess turned back around, green eyes wide and pink-painted lips parted just slightly in shock. “Andy...?” she said, hesitantly, and took a tiny step forward.
Andy felt a broad smile break across her face and nodded just a tiny bit, rubbing her thumb against Jess'.
Jess started to say something, but then the bell rang. The instant everyone around them started to stand, their hands broke apart. But they were still smiling.
“I'll see you after school?” Jess asked, an almost-but-not-quite naughty twinkle in her eye.
Andy nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Jess beamed and pranced away.
Two hours later, sitting in class and trying but failing to pay attention, Andy could still feel Jess' hand in hers.
