The first thing Andy noticed about Jess was that her eyes were green. But they weren't just any green. They were the exact shade of grass just after rain in April. Wet and full of life. The second Andy saw Jess she thought that, and immediately regretted it, because the same thing could suddenly be said about the area between Andy's legs.
It didn't help that the rest of Jess' body was just as breathtaking and vibrant. No one had any right to have hair that black and rich, lips that red and full, skin that white and soft. She was tall, and---not skinny, but not exactly curvy either. She just had the right amount of fat in all the right places.
And she wasn't a bitch like all the breath-taking girls tended to be. Most of the girls treated Andy like something inhuman. Almost worse than the boys, really. The boys would yell a word or two down the hall, but after that would give it up. Girls whispered and sneered and said horrible things in the locker room when they saw Andy's unshaved legs and armpits.
Not Jess. Jess with her pink lip-gloss and stylish sweaters. Jess who was a member of a dozen different clubs. Jess smiled at Andy across the lunch table. Asked for Andy's notes if she hadn't been in class. They never really hung out, but she was the closest Andy had to a friend. And Andy didn't want to lose that.
Sometimes Andy thought the smiles might be flirting. Maybe Jess liked---whatever Andy was. Girl, tomboy, freak. Not just liked, liked. And sometimes Andy thought about smiling back. Thought about asking Jess about herself---what kind of music or books or whatever she liked. Seeing if they could be real friends. Seeing if they could be more. But then what if Jess was just smiling out of pity? What if it was just being friendly? What if Andy asked her out and she freaked and told the whole school? What if, what if, what if.
So Andy didn't smile, and Andy didn't ask Jess out, or even ask Jess what kind of music or books or whatever she liked. Andy just kept eating.
