Title: Freezing That Frame
'Verse/characters: Dave Slayer, Claire Slayer,Amanda Slayer
Prompt: 029. Birth
Word Count: 322
Rating: PG for one swear and reference to abortion
Notes: The prompt explains it.
Logically, Dave should have been asleep hours ago. He'd been up for thirty hours, ten of them spent preparing and performing a show at a dingy little club, the other twenty spent at this hospital. In fact, not ten minutes ago he'd been ready to fall asleep in an incredibly uncomfortable waiting room chair. But that was before.
A smile flickered across his face again when he looked at his sleeping daughter. The day before he had loved her, there was no denying that. But that love was just a speck of dust compared to the the feelings he felt swirling inside him now as he held her in his arms. Now he was sure he made the right choice in marrying Claire. She wasn't a wonderful woman, not even a really nice woman. But if he hadn't, his little girl would have been killed months ago.
His little girl. Despite the fact Dave knew that there were other men in Claire's life, and that there always would be because she was just that kind of woman, deep down he knew this little girl was his. Not just because she looked like him, though that would have been proof enough for many men. No, even if some damned blood test said she wasn't, Dave knew she was his. The way every fiber in his body trembled and dissolved when he looked at her, the fury he felt at the mere thought of anyone ever hurting her, that proved she was his.
Despite all these wonderful and strange and frightening feelings welling up inside him, though, Dave's body eventually overrode his soul and began begging for sleep. Sighing relucantly, Dave set the small bundle down in the plastic crib, tenderly running his fingers over her face and kissing her forehead.
"G'night Pearlie-girl, welcome to the world."
