Chapter 10
March 1, 1982-11:30 AM
“James?”
James groaned when the sound hit his ears, making his head throb. He warily opened his eyes, painfully turning towards the source of the sound.
Mandy. She was sitting by the bed, dressed all in black with a tear stained face. He reached out to her, speaking with a dry voice.
“Mand…hey…you’ve been crying.”
“I’m so sorry” she whispered, eyes watering. He raised an eyebrow, a movement that was rather hard since his face was bandaged.
“What?”
“You don’t remember? The fight we had? I could have killed you” she murmured, gently brushing her fingers against his.
“I’m sorry. I know you were just trying to talk to me, but I just snapped.”
James licked his lips, wondering how he was supposed to tell her that he had wanted her to snap. Instead he asked the only thing nudging at his brain.
“How long have I been here?”
“Two weeks. You’ve been in and out of surgery the entire time. Surprisingly they actually believe a normal wolf did it all.”
“Where’s Jamie?”
“The house. I called the twins and they’re watching her.”
“Oh.”
“James…I’ll understand if you want to leave, you know.”
James stared at her in shock, reaching his hand out to touch her face. Even though his vision was blocked by the bandages and numbed by the painkillers, and even though she’d obviously been crying most of the time since the attack, she was still the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
“And why would I do that, luv?”
“Don’t play with me James. I could have killed you, any man in his right mind would leave.”
“What if I prove that I’ve never been in my right mind and decide to stay?” he asked, hoping she would bring up the subject of changing him by herself.
Mandy sighed.
“I don’t know. I don’t know how you could live with me then but…”
He winced when he noticed the self loathing in her voice. Finally, he decided he just needed to say it.
“Mand, I was trying to provoke you.”
She tilted her head to the side, confused.
“What…”
“The only person you changed you did so in the heat of a fight, you were angry and didn’t know what you were doing. I thought….I thought if I got you riled enough, you might…never mind, it’s stupid.”
She blinked rapidly, staring at him.
“What…you were trying to get me to change you?”
He nodded rigidly, turning his eyes away from her. He could tell from her tone that she was upset, probably angry. He didn’t want to see the rage that was probably present on her face.
“Mand, I’m sorry, but I just thought it would be our only chance to be together.”
”And how did you figure that!? Don’t you know I’d either kill myself or leave if I did that? I
couldn’t live with you if I’d done that, especially knowing you wanted me to. Good God James! We talked about this that day, you said you wouldn’t bring it up again and then you get me to almost kill you!” he’d dared to look now, and immediately regretted it. She was standing now, sobbing hysterically with her hair stuck all around her face and scarf flying with every angry motion.
“How could you do this?”
”I was doing it for us. Luv, please try to understand…”
“Why should I be the one who’s understanding when you can’t understand that I’ll never change you, even if it means I’ll lose you in the end?” she pressed her lips together, glancing at him for a second before she turned away.
“I can’t stay. I can’t hear anymore of this.”
“Mand please….don’t…”
“Oh don’t worry James, I won’t pack up my things and leave. You need me to take care of you, I know that. No other woman would really want you now; because of your little trick, you’re missing half your face. Some of it’s been filled in with plastic, but you can tell. Goodbye.”
James swallowed tensely as he watched her walk out the door, and then after he was sure she was out of hearing range and no one was around, he fell back against the pillows sobbing and hitting at any part of his body he was capable of getting to.
