Tori-coverage helped out with this, her versions of 'New Age' (Mandy's half) and 'Enjoy the Silence' (James' half). Squee!

AN: This chapter is going to seem like filler, but it's actually veery important.

Chapter 7
February 15, 1982-5:30 AM

That night was the most mindblowing they'd shared together in years. Not exactly in action, they didn't do anything really kinky, but just in emotion. Things were going to be shaky, they both admitted that, but they loved each other. Anger flared between them, but that one thing would never change. Making love that night for almost an hour solidified that truth, and of course, they tested the fit of the new collar.
Now, early the next morning, Mandy had her head against his chest, unable to sleep. She wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because the moon was going to be full tonight, and she always felt a little twitchy the day before the change she was powerless to stop. Or because she kept listening to James' each breath, unable to keep herself from tensing a little when they seemed too far apart. Whatever it was, even though she was tired as hell, she couldn't close her eyes.
Once, she felt his hand move down her side and she instinctively shifted to get as deep into the touch as she could, and then she figured it out. She didn't want to sleep because she wanted to spend every moment with him she could, trying to mentally freeze each second in her memory so that when the time came…
She flinched then, swallowing. She couldn't think about that. They'd been lucky throughout the past decade, who was to say they wouldn't be now? There, positive thinking. A rare thing, and lying to herself at that, but it was enough. She closed her eyes and nuzzled her head into his chest, sighing contently.

James woke up to his wife snuggling into his skin, making the kind of pleasured noises he hadn't heard from her in too long. He ran a hand through her hair, staring blankly at the ceiling while he thought. After they made up verbally, the rest of the day had been spent trying to reconnect emotionally, and then physically after Jamie went to bed. While the sex had been wonderful, he still couldn't fight the feeling that something wasn't right. After a couple silent moments, he realized what it was. The same thing that had been wrong for seven years.
He'd told Mandy in the beginning that he wouldn't ask her to change him, that he'd just be there to protect her from the cruel world. And for the first few years that had been enough. But as Jamie got older and he watched the two of them every month, he always felt excluded. It was silly in a way, they always tried to involve him in their games but then they would run off after some rabbit or something and they wouldn't seem like his wife and daughter until morning. The desire to become like them, to be connected to the two of them on an even deeper level, had become even stronger after his diagnosis. Of course he never mentioned it, since he knew Mandy would shoot him down. She felt horrible about the fact her children were 'like her' and refused to 'curse' him.
He ran his hands along her arm, shivering a little when he felt the hair that was a little thicker than most women's prickle under his touch. The moon was going to be full tonight. Meaning he'd probably just sit on the porch and watch the two of them run around with only his thoughts as company. The strangely comforting thoughts that if somehow he could get Mandy to finally give in, this damned plague might not take him from her.
James sighed, shaking his head. He needed to stop thinking about it. Even if he was on his deathbed, she would never agree to it. And he didn't want to upset her over it, so might as well just make the best of the time they had left. He held her closer, kissing her hair and closing his eyes.
