Chapter 5
May 6, 1974-6:40 AM
The first sound James heard was a slight snuffling, followed by the feel of something warm and wet against his back. Then he heard the sizzling and smelled cooking meat. He laughed softly and rolled over, gently stroking Mandy’s hair.
“I guess you’re hungry?”
“Nnhmm?” she tossed her head slightly, then opened her eyes.
“What? What time is it?”
“Almost seven.”
“Then why am I awa…” her eyes brightened and she sat up, licking her lips.
“Well, that answers that question.”
James smiled, kissing her nose before getting up and pulling on his clothes.
“I guess your mum’s cooking was the only reason you agreed to come back here, right?”
“Damn straight” she blew her hair out of her face in frustration as she attempted to get into her clothes. James shook his head, walking up behind her and wrapping his arms across her chest, helping her get the button done on her pants.
“Any plans for after breakfast?”
“Mmm, escape as quickly as we can to the back and neck for a few hours. Beyond that, not much.”
James laughed, gently nuzzling her neck before grabbing her hand and walking downstairs.
“Well g’mornin’ sleepy head, wondered how long it was gonna take ya” Mary smiled warmly at her daughter, hiding her feeling of unease when James sat down beside her, arm wrapped around her shoulder and mouth buried in her neck.
Rich, however, was unable to do so.
“D’ya mind? Some of us are tryin’ to eat.”
Mandy immediately stopped her girlish giggling and edged away from James, eyes cast to her plate. James glared at the man and slid his hand under the table, wrapping it around Mandy’s free one. After giving her a small smile, he cautiously lifted up his fork and turned it to Mandy. She smirked, nipping off the bit of bacon from it, licking her lips. James laughed and slid his finger into her mouth, both of them pulling away when Rich slammed his hands down on the table.
“Dammit all, don’t ya two have a decent bone in yer bodies? Ya should be ashamed of yerselves, actin’ like this when yer not even engaged.”
James felt the rage bubble up in him when he saw the hurt tears in Mandy’s eyes, stunned when he didn’t have to use it. Instead, Mandy stood up, glaring at her father.
“Just because I happen to love a boy you don’t approve of and I don’t think we need to marry to prove our love is real doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I can’t believe you and Ma were surprised I ran away, you treated me at least this bad then too. Well get it through your thick skull, James isn’t you and I’m not Ma. We’re different, and we’re happy!” and then she tore out the front door, just as James noticed the fur beginning to tip her ears and her growing nails. He stood up without excusing himself and ran after her.
“Mandy!”
Mandy looked up, stopping mid sob as she smelled James on the wind just a moment before she heard his voice and his footfall. She moved out from behind the large rock, glancing back at him. He visually relaxed and ran over to her, falling down on his knees beside her and cupping her neck, pulling her to him.
“Are you all right?”
She nodded, sniffing.
“I think so. He just makes me so upset…I mean, if he can’t accept us, how would he ever accept…” she shook her head, burying her face in his shirt.
“How can he treat me like this? His own daughter…” she sobbed again, trembling. James kissed her hair, rubbing his hands up and down her back.
“I don’t know luv. Some people are just that way. If I ever treat our child like that, you have permission to rip my heart out if I don’t beat you to it.”
She laughed softly, clawing through his shirt as she ran her hands up and down his back.
“I love you so much. You know that, right?”
“Of course I do” he kissed her forehead, gently moving her backwards so they were hidden from view behind the boulder, shoving her down and tenderly unbuttoning her shirt while he kissed her neck.
Once he pulled away, Mandy grabbed his neck and pulled him down, kissing him hard while she drowned in the taste of his saliva and bacon, growling softly.
“Mmm, you’re delicious.”
“And you’re beautiful” he murmured, running his hands up and down her sides, brushing the fine fur covering her sensitive skin. He raised an eyebrow when she started giggling.
“What…?”
She shook her head, smiling.
“You’re tickling me, idiot.”
James smirked, kissing her quickly.
“No, that was petting. This is tickling” and with that, he started a new, vicious ‘assault’ on her body, laughing and kissing her the entire time, so for a little while they were able to forget the terrible world that was less than a hundred yards away.
