Chapter 4
April 13, 1974-7:30 AM
“Git up.”
James groaned when he felt something sharp poking him in the side. He opened his eyes, gaping when he saw a woman who was at least in her mid sixties standing there, frowning.
“Excuse me?”
“Ya heard me. Git up.”
“Who are you?”
“Name’s Myra. Not git.”
James sighed, gently easing himself out from under Mandy, trying not to wake her up. This proved unnecessary, though, since she was already awake. She looked up with wide eyes at the woman, face pale.
“Auntie…what’re you doing here?”
“Yer folks sent me to look for ya when they woke up this mornin’ and saw ya weren’t there.”
Mandy sighed, reaching over for her clothes. As she got dressed, her aunt’s eyes lit up and she grabbed her hand.
“Lemme see your palm.”
“Why?”
“Thought I saw somethin’, that’s all.”
Mandy glanced at James, eyes filled with fear. After his sleep fogged mind cleared, he realized why. Her terror that someone in her family would be able to see the signs and know her for what she was. One of these signs being a pentagram on the palm.
Myra stared at the skin, and a large visible shudder ran through her. She looked up into Mandy’s face, speaking with an unbelievably tender tone.
“How long?”
Mandy swallowed, closing her eyes.
“Twelve years, give or take a bit.”
Myra sighed, then grabbed James’ hand. After she saw no mark on him, she dropped both their arms and stood up.
“Git dressed and go back to the house.”
When she’d gotten dressed, Mandy stood.
“Auntie…you won’t…you won’t tell…”
“Why would I tell those ignorant fools? They wouldn’t believe it if they saw it with their own eyes. Now for the last time, git.”
Mandy swallowed and James could see that she was thinking back to the one time someone in her family had seen it. He gently grabbed her hand, holding it the entire way to the house.
Later that night, after they’d forced themselves through another day with her family, the couple was laying in bed, Mandy’s head against James’ chest and his hand stroking her side when what had happened this morning hit him again.
“We should leave” he whispered. She looked up at him, a little stunned.
“Huh?”
“We got lucky today Mand. What if your aunt does tell?”
“Aunt Myra? She wouldn’t. We’re too close.”
“What if someone else in your family finds out? What if one of them sees you?”
Mandy sighed, kissing him harshly.
“James. No one is going to find out. I’m going to go out far away from them during the full moon, and I’m going to work at keeping my temper under control. We can’t leave, that would mean giving into them” she laid back down, nuzzling against him.
“Besides, I like it here. I can run without worrying about getting hit by a car.”
James laughed softly, kissing her hair.
“All right, we’ll stay. Just promise you’ll be careful. I can’t bear the thought of losing you.”
“You won’t lose me. Now, I’m beat” she kissed him again.
“G’night.”
“Sweet dreams” he kissed her chin as she laid in the crook of his arm. He spent the rest of the night watching her, hand draped across her chest so his palm was resting on her stomach. He wished she wasn’t so confident sometimes. It was obvious that people could find out even if she did leave the property to change, and she had a horrible handle on her emotions so the odds of her changing around her father were incredibly high. Also, there was the horrible threat of the werewolf hunters who might see her one night out in the fields, people who would probably shoot him if they had to.
And, he thought as he felt a soft fluttering against his fingers, it wouldn’t be just her life on the line if she was caught.
