Chapter 8
February 6-2:30 AM

James started a little when he heard a soft creaking from the down the hall. After nothing happened for a few moments, he sighed and rolled over. He smiled tiredly, kissing the back of Mandy’s neck. God, just a few more hours, and they could finally put this nightmare behind them. A storm had hit shortly before their flight to New York was scheduled to leave, so they were now leaving at six thirty. Luckily, they hadn’t heard anything about Brian in this time, and even if he were alive, it wouldn’t matter.
He was just drifting off to sleep when he heard a crashing sound. He bolted up right, brushing Mandy’s arm and waking her up at the same time.
She looked up, rubbing her eyes as he leapt from the bed.
“What is it?”
“I’m sure it’s nothing, go back to sleep luv.”
Normally Mandy would have protested, but under the circumstances, she just mumbled something and buried her face back in the pillow.
James cautiously walked out into the hall, looking around.
“Anyone there?”
He saw someone standing in the doorway and walked over, hands shaking.
“Who’s there?”
“Just me” the words said with a slightly upbeat tone as the figure stepped out of the shadows. James snarled as he saw a streak of blue hair.
“Brian…how…”
Brian smiled sadistically, rolling down the shoulder of his shirt to show a grotesque wound.
“Jack’s a good aim, but not perfect.”
“Why can’t you just leave us alone Brian?”
“She’s done more than enough to fuck up my life, I’m just returning the favor” Brian laughed a little and started walking towards James when the bedroom door creaked. James whipped his head around, swallowing when he saw Mandy.
“Mand…”
“I thought I smelled a rat,” she muttered. Brian grinned.
“I’d just move and let us take care of this ourselves, boy.”
James’ eyelid twitched angrily.
“And if I don’t?”
Brian smiled and James knew he had said the wrong thing as Brian’s teeth elongated and his clothes ripped. In the space of a few moments, a golden wolf was lunging at him. He tried to move, tried to defend himself in anyway he could; when Mandy, half changed, came out from behind him and tackled Brian to the ground.
James backed up a few steps, watching in horror as they wrestled around the living room. Mandy’s teeth sank into Brian’s front left leg and suddenly she yelped and pulled away from him. James swallowed tensely as he saw the blood on her leg, the wound identical to Brian’s. Brian seemed to almost smile and jumped on her, teeth grabbing hold of the back of Mandy’s neck and holding on tight.
James stood by, silently fuming for a few moments before something clicked in his brain. He dashed into the bedroom, fumbling around until he found the silver chain.
He carefully walked near the two wolves, who were too wrapped up in their fight to smell or hear his approach. Breathing in sharply, he bent down and wrapped the chain around Brian’s neck, yanking him back and off of Mandy.
Brian snarled, trying to reach back and bite James’ hand, but ended up just burning himself. James dug his knee into Brian’s back, bending his neck and pulling the silver even deeper into the fur. He gagged as he smelled blood and burning skin but held on until the creature stopped whining and dropped forward. James hesitantly stepped back, watching as the wolf slowly changed into a naked lifeless man.
He turned his head as he heard a soft whining. He watched Mandy stand up, limping slightly, and walk over to Brian’s body. She nudged her nose against his forehead, tilting his head so he was facing the ceiling. She pawed at him, then seemed to realize he really was dead and quietly walked over to James, resting her chin on his foot, whining quietly.
James knelt down, stroking her head and back as she changed back, the whines changing to quiet hysterical sobs. He held her close to him, mouth against her ear.
“It’s okay Mand. It’s over. He’ll never hurt you again.”
“You…you kept your promise” she sobbed into his shoulder.
“What?”
“You protected me, even though you could have been killed. You kept your promise” she looked up, smiling tearfully.
“No man’s ever done that for me before.”
He smiled, helping her up by wrapping an arm around her shoulders. He kissed her cheek, walking her back to the bedroom.
“Well, I’m not like most men. After all, most men don’t fall in love with werewolves.”
She smiled, laughing a little as he laid her on the bed and picked up her leg, inspecting the damage.
“…I know I say it all the time, but things like this make me realize that I really do love you.”
James smiled, setting her foot down after seeing the wound wasn’t too horrible and laid next to her, stroking her hair and kissing her shoulder.
“Love you too Mand.”
She sighed, nuzzling up next to him and promptly falling asleep, dreaming of a new life, which certainly couldn’t be anymore complicated than this one had been. Could it?

To be continued…
