I actually don't fear for my safety on this one, surprisingly...
Chapter 6
January 26, 1974-7:30 AM
James glanced at the clock for the millionth time, sighing and leaning back, head touching the wall. Two hours. Two hours of having the nurses tell him that things were very ‘touch and go’ right now, that they couldn’t tell him anything for sure. Well, one of the nicer ones told him they’d gotten the contractions to stop but that she was still bleeding. That was an hour ago.
“Mr. Worthington?”
James bolted up, walking to the young redhead holding the chart.
“Yeah?”
“Miss…Handel’s your girlfriend, right?”
“Right. How is she?”
“She’s going to be just fine. A little shaken up and tired, but fine.”
James swallowed, heart jumping to his throat as he forced himself to ask the next question.
“A-and the baby?”
The young girl smiled.
“Still right where you left it.”
Even though he was in presence of strangers, James didn’t even try to hold back his relieved tears. The nurse patted his back slightly.
“She asked to see you.”
James smiled, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand and walking to the room the girl was pointing to. He silently sent up a thankful prayer, glad he hadn’t had to repeat what had happened a few months ago the last time he saw her in a hospital bed. Glad he hadn’t had to relieve the image of her curled up, trying hard not to cry and then finally breaking down in his arms.
This time she was smiling, biting her lower lip with tiredly happy eyes.
“James…” she wrapped her arms around his neck the second he sat down by her, leaning her forehead against his shoulder.
“Did they tell you?”
He nodded, laughing and crying at the same time, kissing all over her face.
“Yeah.”
“God, I wish you’d been in here, but I guess they didn’t want both of us freaking out at the same time if things went bad. I heard the heartbeat. It was…I don’t know how to describe it. I cried, one of the nurses did too.”
James grinned, brushing his thumb tenderly against her lips.
“I was so worried…”
“So was I” she held his hand, staring at him.
“We have to do something about Brian. We got lucky this time. We might not next time.”
James nodded.
“I was thinking about that. I heard him talking to Jerry…they’re planning to kill Maxwell. A fake shooting.”
“And…?”
“What’s the classic way to kill werewolves, darling?”
Mandy grinned evilly, kissing him.
“I love it when you think evil.”
“He’s evil, I’m just vengeful” he smiled, kissing her again.
“You’d better get some sleep.”
“Mmm…” she lay down in the bed, staring him.
“…I don’t see any nurses around, think you could lay next to me?”
“I’m sure it’s against-“
“Please?”
James sighed.
“Dammit, how you always get me to give into you…” he grumbled, kicking off his shoes and awkwardly clambering over the bedrail until they were chest to chest. He wrapped his arm across her back.
“Happy now?”
“Mmm, very” she murmured, nuzzling his chest.
James sighed, keeping his head burrowed in her shoulder until he felt her breathing fall to a sleeping pace. He looked up, making sure she was asleep. He kissed her forehead, stroking his fingers through her hair. Wrapping his arm around her waist in a brief, protective embrace, he stood up and gingerly climbed out of the bed. He had things to take care of, and not a lot of time to do them.
