Chapter 14

November 20, 1973-10:30 PM

Those next ten days were an absolute hell, in some ways, but in other ways blissful heaven. Apparently, Brian had done more to James’ eyes than simply bruise the flesh around them. When James had woken up the next morning, he’d been unable to see Mandy, having to find her by sight and smell. In a way this sharpening of his senses had thrilled her, but she had still locked herself in the bathroom and cried, only coming out when she realized it was going to last for some time and that he would need her help.
Sure, it was hard dealing with the fact that James’ sunny disposition had left with his sight, that he was now overly cynical and snide. But then there were the small upsides. Like the fact that Mandy could now change at night and curl up beside him without worrying about him waking up before morning and seeing.
She’d gotten so used to his blindness and had finally accepted the fact that it would probably be permanent when things changed.
Mandy was in the middle of changing, giving into it so peacefully that even this one that she couldn’t resist if she tried didn’t hurt, when she heard a loud crash. She’d already dropped to her knees, hands changing into paws, in such a cumbersome state that it was impossible for her to look up and see what had happened.
The second her muscles settled into their form, Mandy circled around the bed to James’ side, whining when she saw he’d rolled out of bed and apparently hit his head on the lamp. She nuzzled him with her nose, licking his neck. He groaned loudly, rolling over onto his side. His face twitched and he blinked several times, hesitantly opening his eyes.
“Wha….what happened?” he muttered, sitting up. He turned his head to the side, looking around the room. His face lit up and Mandy knew he could see. God, why tonight? Why couldn’t it have happened at least in the morning?
Too late to think now. At least she was all the way through the change. She started to dart from the room when she realized he was turning back around to face her. She looked at him, feeling this would be the last time she’d see his beautiful face. A soft, caring look came upon him and he held his hand out.
“Well hey there. How’d you get in here?”
Mandy sniffed deeply, taking in his scent before bolting from the flat.

“Mand?”
Mandy whimpered, rubbing her face against the warm hand that caressed it, hoping to wipe away the pain in her jaw. Then she breathed in and recognized James’ scent. Her eyes flew open and she sat up. She saw she was in the bathroom, the tub to be precise, and that the porcelain around her was stained red. James was kneeling by the tub, wearing blue jeans without a shirt. She swallowed, trying hard to find her voice.
“What happened?”
James tenderly reached a hand out, running it down her throat to her stomach, wrenching a gasp from her as he touched a large gash.
“I woke up to some dogs fighting this morning, a bit before the sun came up. I went outside and one I saw last night was there. The other one threw it to the ground and left. I walked over and…” he sighed, unable to believe what he was about to say.
“I saw the one that lost turn into my soul mate.”
Mandy’s eyes widened as she remembered the fight. She was in a horrible mood after what happened in the bedroom earlier, so she’d gotten into quite a few fights with street dogs. Unfortunately, by the last one she was horribly tired and got her ass beat. She remembered now hitting the cement, jaw cracking on the hard ground, obviously growing worse when the sun rose fully and she changed back. She drew further into herself, hardly noticing as several of her wounds split open.
James stretched his hand out again, stroking her hair as she began to sob.
“Mand…whatever it is, I’ll understand. You know that. Just give me an explanation.”
“There’s nothing to explain James. You saw all there is. I’m a werewolf, a fucking freak. Go ahead, go out and get me a silver necklace so you can keep me in my place like Brian, or maybe you’ll just leave and tell me I’m lucky you didn’t chop my head off.”
James drew away, stunned.
“Mandy, how can you think I’d do that?”
“Because everyone leaves me, in one way or another, once they find out. They either take away their love or their whole body. And don’t tell me you won’t leave and that you want me to change you, because I won’t do it.”
James crawled into the tub, forcing his hand between her knee and chin, lifting her head up.
“I’m not going to leave, and I’m not going to become like you” his deep purple eyes bored into hers with loving passion.
“I’m going to stay here and protect you. I won’t let any villagers come carrying pitchforks and torches. I love you too much to lose you just because of a silly little thing like this.”
Mandy’s eyes lit up. A silly little thing like this. She would have killed any other man who thought her deformity was a ‘silly little thing’ but from him it was sweet. He didn’t care about her other side. He just wanted her. She smiled, kissing him and nipping just a tad harder than usual, careful not to bite the skin.
James laughed a little as she moved down, sniffing and licking his shoulder with far more animalistic energy than she had before.
“My beautiful wolf…” he whispered, stroking her neck and arms, shivering as her hair prickled and slowly became fur under his touch. Sure, it was going to take some getting used to, but he just knew it was going to be worth it in the end.

To be continued….
