yes, I know, the daily updates of the story have been cut off due to 1. Spending the night at Bri's 2. Writing some at Bri's and having to wait to get it 3. A stubborn cold 4. And just plain laziness. I promise to get back on track after this. I really don't like how the chapter ends too much, but there's going to be more conflicts and so much violence in one chapter seems a bit much
Chapter 10
August 20, 1973-10:30 PM
Mandy glanced over at James, sighing when she saw he was asleep. She gently kissed his forehead and stood up, trembling as the change started spreading through her. She walked into the bathroom, hanging her robe on the inside doorknob. Then she walked out, nude, and stood in the moonlight. She growled contently as her bones snapped, dropping onto her hands and knees. She snarled, turning her face up to the moon. Then she ran out the door inot he London twilight.
James woke up at five the next morning, rolling over to bury his face in Mandy’s hair, keeping his eyes closed until he realized she wasn’t there. Then he stood up, looking around the flat.
“Mand?”
Mandy whimpered as she changed back, panting over the toilet. Her face cracked, brining on an overwhelming wave of nausea. She heard James walking away, heading towards the kitchen. She sighed, standing up and slipping into her robe, quietly walking out.
James whipped his head around as the linoleum creaked, dropping the large spoon into the mixing bowl.
“Are you okay?”
Mandy laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck and nibbling his lips.
“Fine luv, just morning sickness” she let out a low contented growl as he protectively wrapped an arm around her waist, stroking her stomach.
“Sorry luv. It’s just if anything happened to you or the baby, I’d never forgive myself.”
Mandy grinned, gently nuzzling his neck.
“I know luv. I love that you worry about me, but you need to calm down a leetle bit” she ran her curved nails down his chest.
“But I am sorry for scaring you. Now" she smiled slightly, pulling away.
“How about some breakfast?”
James laughed softly, kissing her.
“Of course.”
But just as James started putting the batter into the waffle iron, the phone rang loudly. Mandy snorted.
“I’ll get it” she pranced to the phone, feeling safe and energetic now that her change was out of the way for the month. She picked up the phone; a little surprised when she heard her chipper voice.
“Hello?”
“Hello Mandy.”
A chill ran through her, hair bristling. Brian.
“What is it Bri?”
“What’s he taste like, Mand?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know very well what I mean. Your lover boy. Is he good? Does he make you howl?”
“Shut up Brian, just shut up.”
“Oh nice one Mand” he laughed.
“Or should I say Amiliana?”
Mandy’s eyes flew open, hearing the line go dead as she stared. She dropped the receiver, turning around as she heard James’ familiar tread.
“What is it?” he wrapped an arm around her waist when he saw the pain in her eyes. She shook her head, pulling away sharply and storming to the door. James rose an eyebrow and followed.
Mandy threw the front door open, feeling something inside her cower and cry as she looked out. A beat up pickup, probably about twenty years old. A woman with faded brown hair sitting in the passenger seat. A man in sunglasses and a plaid shirt at the wheel. But the most alarming thing was the woman beside them. It had been almost ten years but she’d recognize her anywhere. Sophie. Her master. Her mate.
She stood in the doorway, staring in painful shock. How dare she come here after what she had done!
“What’s wrong babe?” James nuzzled her neck, stunned when she shied away from him. He looked up then, eyebrow arching again.
“Who’re these people?”
The truck door opened then and the brunette walked out, smiling wildly.
“Ami dahlin? Is that you?”
“What’re you doin’ here Ma?”
“Oh baby, we thought you were dead! Nine years without hearin’ nothin’. Some nice man called and said he knew where you were stayin’.”
Mandy laughed bitterly.
“If you’d cared you would have gone searching for me right after I left.”
“Babe, your Dad-“
“Oh that’s right, Daddy is here isn’t he? I thought that was just a mass of hot air in the front. So what do you have to say Ma? That I’m still your baby girl even if I’m a cuntsucking monster?”
James’ eyes widened, knowing from Mandy’s tone that these words had been thrown at her. How could anyone treat their own child like that?
The driver’s door opened then and Mandy’s father stepped out. He gave James a once over, shaking his head.
“So first it’s girls, now it’s fairies, what next sheep?”
James’ eyes filled with fire and he grabbed Mandy, kissing her passionately.
“Go wait inside, luv. I’ll take care of this” he whispered into her hair, kissing the side of her face. She gave him a slightly worried look, but nodded. She wrapped her arms around his neck, making sure her father saw how her pointed teeth nibbled his lower lip as she pulled him into a kiss, then pulled away and walked inside. As she turned, her father stepped forward, yelling at the door.
“RUNNING AWAY AGAIN HUH YA FREAK!?”
Mandy bit her knuckles, wishing she had a tail right now so she could tuck it between her legs. She prayed that the tears would hold on for a few seconds and dashed into the house, slamming the door childishly.
James stepped forward, glaring at her father.
“What’s your name?”
“Rich.”
“Well Rich, I’d like to have a little word with you” he took the older gentlemen’s wrist, twisting his arm behind his back.
“Where do you get the nerve to treat your daughter like that, especially a daughter you haven’t seen in almost a decade?”
Rich laughed nervously.
“You didn’t see what I saw. She’s a monster.”
“I don’t care if you saw her eating a dead body, she’s your child. And before I beat the shite out of you, I’m going to let you know that I care about her more than you’ll ever know. Seeing what you’ve done to her makes me want more than ever to see her in the right hands…even if those hands are not my own” then, he took those normally gentle hands and beat Rich to a bloody pulp.
After he was finished, James stood up and glanced at Mandy’s mother, giving Rich another swift kick in the ribs.
“Sorry about this ma’am.”
“Call me Mary” she brushed her hair away from her face.
“And I understand. Rich can be…” she swallowed, remembering the two years before her baby girl ran away when she’d had to watch Rich beating her up because if she intervened, she’d get it much worse after Ami went to bed.
“Stubborn sometimes.”
James nodded, turning his head again as the car door opened and a curvaceous strawberry blonde in a white tank top and blue jeans walked out, glancing timidly at James.
“Ah…Ah just wanna say, Ah really admire what ya just did. Ami deserves a person who’ll take one for her, gah or gal. Ah thought Ah could be that person for her, but when it came to really defendin’ us…” a shudder ran down Sophie’s spine, nose prickling as she smelled Ami on this boy’s skin.
James nodded nervously.
“Ah yeah…what exactly happened…”
Sophie sighed, glad there really had been a slightly safer reason to Ami’s fleeing Texas.
“Her dad caught me an’ her together one night. She left a few hours later. Came to mah window askin’ me to come with her but…” Sophie’s chest tightened, heart still pained over her stupid decision years ago.
James saw the longing in this girl’s eyes and sighed.
“Go on in and talk to her. I think I’ve got things under control here.”
Sophie smiled shyly and tiptoed through the door.
Mandy lifted her head when Sophie was still on the steps, fury racing through her veins. That bitch. That quite-literal-bitch. She had no right to talk to her after what had happened between them that night.
“Am?” Sophie peeked in, swallowing when she saw Mandy sitting on the couch, curled up.
“Oh Am…”
“Don’t you ‘oh Am’’ me! You lost the right to use that tone with me the night you sent me into this world alone.”
“Ami…I just thought it would be better if…”
“Well you thought wrong, didn’t you?” Mandy snarled, standing up and showing her teeth.
She felt the fur covering her arms, letting the pleasant pain of her muscles stretching spur on her anger.
Sophie shook her head.
“Babe, what other choice did I have?”
“You could have come with me! We could have been happy together, here. They accept it here!”
“Accept what, Am’? The fact that you’re a dyke or the fact that every month you strip and go howl at the moon?”
“How dare you take this so lightly” Mandy walked closer to Sophie, nostrils flaring. She put her hand around her former lover’s neck, digging her claws into the soft flesh.
“You ruined my life, giving me this. Not only have I lost or been blackmailed by almost everyone I’ve loved, but I’ve cursed two sweet beautiful children with this affliction.”
“Oh Ami, don’t talk like that. Think about running in the moonlight, howling just for the joy of being wild…”
“That might be if I had someone to run with. There’s little joy in howling when there’s no one to howl back.”
“Change the boy.”
Mandy dug her nails into Sophie’s throat, throwing her against the wall and pinning her down as the change spread further, snarling as her face elongated. Sophie yelped, changing herself and rolling over. They wrestled for several minutes until Sophie’s ears perked and Mandy’s nose twitched. They hurriedly broke away, changing back and adjusting their clothes. James peered in, looking at the two girls.
“What…”
“Just a little spat, luv” Mandy smiled, forcing her lips closed when she felt her fangs. Sophie shrugged, picking up a packet she had dropped by the door, handing it to Mandy.
“Well, goodbye then” she glanced sadly at her former mate, eyes shining appealingly at Mandy’s cold ones. Then she turned and walked out, getting in the car with Mary and Rich and leaving.
Mandy pulled away from James, storming to the sofa. She flopped down, opening the packet with her fingernail. A sob filled her throat when she saw the pictures of her and Sophie, pictures that would have made the women back home blush at the very least. God, Sophie had a helluva lot of nerve.
James timidly walked over to her, sitting at her feet.
“Luv? What’s wrong?” then he glanced at the photos and cupped her cheek, stroking her skin and hair.
“Oh luv…”
She closed her eyes, pulling away from him, though she wanted nothing more than to curl up around him.
“Shouldn’t you be getting to do the studio?” she whispered, willing herself not to go on a destructive rampage until he left.
James stood up, stunned.
“Fuck the studio, fuck the album! You need me more than the fucking album does!”
She smiled, imagining this powerful soul inside a wolf’s skin. She stood up, taking his hands, tenderly stroking the skin.
“Hey, don’t worry. I just need a little time to myself to deal with these feelings, okay?” she kissed his lips, licking them before pulling away. James sighed, closing his eyes for a moment before hugging her tight.
“Fine. I’ll call every half hour, and if you don’t answer I’m coming right home.”
Mandy rolled her eyes.
“All right. Get going, I bet everything’s swearing up a storm wondering where you are.”
“Bye luv” he kissed her cheek and walked out. Mandy sighed, flopping back on the couch to examine the photos, wondering how she could have ever believed Sophie to be her one true mate.
