Chapter 3
London-January 19, 1968 10:40 PM
Mandy barked happily, licking her daughter's face as she held her down with her paw, finally relinquishing after Emily let out a few pathetic yips. Then Mandy sat to the side, flopping over and watching contently as the twins wrestled. It was strange. As a human she was constantly tearing her hair in exasperation as they behaved 'like animals' but watching them fight as wolves made her proud. Even the memory of the playfights the three of them indulged in when Candi was gone made her warm inside
Her ears perked up as she heard a loud clicking, nose twitching at the same time when the scent of Candi's perfume filled her nose. She yelped, putting a paw between the twins. They both knew just form this interruption what was happening, and as Mandy pulled back, trying to hasten the change, she saw the two of them scampering to the bedroom.
"Mandy?" Candi called. Mandy growled, damning the moon for keeping her from changing. She curled up behind a chair, hoping Candi would think she was in the bathroom and would be too tired to question why she wasn't in the bedroom a few minutes later.
"Mandy?" she heard Candi walked around, stripping as she went. Mandy 's mouth watered and she barely restrained the urge to run out and pin Candi in a passionate tackle.
She tensed as Candi came around behind the chair, curling up in a tight ball, hoping she could blend in with the shadows.
"Ow!” Mandy jumped as Candi stubbed her toe, yelping. The sudden movement caught Candi's attention and she crouched down to Mandy's eye level.
"Hey pretty. What're you doing here? Don't you have a home to go to?"
Mandy whined, fighting the urge to jump on Candi. She quickly ran around her girlfriend, out the door and strolled the streets the rest of the night.
Mandy came home the next morning dressed in some clothes she’d found a few feet from a couple having sex in the park, cheek cut slightly from a fight she’d had with a street dog. She opened the door hesitantly, hoping Candi was at work.
No such luck. Her lover was sitting in a chair, cross-legged, in a small red dress. The twins were sitting on the floor a few feet from her, surprisingly quiet. Almost morose. Mandy tapped her knuckles against the doorframe and Candi looked up, smiling sadly.
“Hey luv. Where were you last night?”
“Got called out.”
“And the scratch?”
Mandy self-consciously brushed her bangs out.
“Catfight” she tried to smile, stopping when she saw the look on Candi’s face.
“What?”
“I went to check on the twins last night. I never saw Emily with a black nose before.”
Mandy felt the colour flee from her skin. She swallowed, looking at the twins who looked just as frightened.
Candi walked over, brushing Mandy’s hair from her face and tenderly cupping her cheek.
“Babe, what’s going on? I don’t care what you are, just be honest with me. I love you, just because I find out something scary doesn’t mean you’ve changed in my eyes and that I’ll leave.”
Mandy closed her eyes, clutching Candi’s hand.
“You’ll try to kill me” she whispered softly. Candi shook her head, kissing Mandy’s forehead.
“No luv, I won’t. C’mon, just tell me.”
“…Do you believe in werewolves?”
“Oh honey….baby…”
“You don’t believe me, do you?” Mandy pulled back, preparing to show Candi, who grabbed her.
“No, I believe you. Is that why Michael broke up with you? He found out?”
Mandy nodded.
“I understand if you leave.”
“No. I love you Mand. You’re sweet and smart and funny. This just makes you even more special.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying…” Candi moved in close, putting her mouth against Mandy’s ear.
“I want you to change me. You can do that, can’t you?”
Mandy swallowed, pulling away.
“You don’t know what you’re asking.”
“I’m asking to be with you, to live with you as your partner or mate or whatever you want to call me. Please Mand…”
“I can’t. I asked my girlfriend to do the same thing, and you know how that ended.”
“Is that why you left?”
“Sort of. Half the lesbianism, half this. Anyway…things change. Relationships change and end. I can’t curse you with this Candice.”
Candi started at Mandy’s use of her full name.
“You won’t be cursing me Mand, please…”
“No. After I do, in a few years you’ll regret it. You’ll hate me for giving you the pain of having to change at every full moon, having to hide for fear you’ll hurt someone. I’m sorry Cand. I love you, but I have to live alone this. I’ve already ruined two lives due to my stupidity, I’m not going to ruin another” she knelt down, picking up the twins.
“Mandy….”
“Please understand Cand. I’m a lone wolf, I have to be to survive, and I always will be. Goodbye.”
