"How is she?" James intercepted the first nurse to walk out of the room. The red head blinked.
"Ah...fine, fine. Exept..."
"Execept what?" James felt his heart start racing, sweat sprining to his skin.
She shook her head.
"I think the doctor should tell you"m she said as she moved away to let James through.
The first thing he saw as he walked through the door was Mandy's fear filled eyes, making her look even smaller and more delicate in the hospital gown. In fact, there was an almost childlike quality to them, something he'd nevr seen in her before, even after the worse beating from Brian.
Ane lderly white coat took his arm, turning to speak to him in murmurs.
"Before you speak to her...it seems Miss Slad has-"
"Has what? What's wrong with her?"
The doctor sighed wearily.
"People have different ways of dealing with things like this. Some stop talking, some get angry. It seems Mandy has..reverted back to the mind set of a child, approximatly a five year old."
James coughed, eyes widening.
"What? How...how long is she going to..."
"As long as she thinks she needs to do it to protect hereslf. There's nothing I can do to force her out of it, and if I tried it could seriously injure her."
James sighed, turning ot look athis former wife, who's eyes locked on the doctor with seeming fear, but the instant they passed over him they brightened.
"What am I supposed to do then?"
The doctor smiled sadly.
"Take care of her."
James sighed.
"Have you talked to her? I mean..."
"Another doctor did, she wouldn't let me near her. In fact she's been rather hesistant of even the male orderlies. Not surprising, really. And from what I hear she didn't give many answers. When asked what happend and why she was acting like this she just started crying."
"Well...do you think I could..."
The doctor nodded.
"Just don't be surprised if she looks scared."
James nodded and walked over to the examining table Mandy was perched on. She looked up at him, a strange mix of innocence and fear in her eyes. James chewed his tongue, trying to figure out how to talk to her. How did one go about having a conversation with a thirty five year old woman who was suddenly acting like a kindergartner?
He sat down next to her, petting her hair in what he hoped would be a comforting motion. She seemed to flinch at first, but then looked at him. He smiled hopefully.
"Hey Mand. You know who I am, right?"
She nodded, smiling a little. A little bit of the tension left his body.
"Okay. I'm gonna take you home with me tonight, all right?"
She nodded again, suddenly grabbing his arm as the doctor walked over, handing James a piece of paper.
"When she's ready to talk..."
James looked at the paper and saw a few questions written on it. He nodded and jammed it in his pocket, touching his feet to the floor, sighing inwardly as Mandy held her hands out to him, a motion he understood immediatly to mean she wanted picked up. This was going to be harder than he thought.
