The last segment of the second-to-last story in my Curt/Mandy series. To read the other chapters, click the tag.
Curt spent the hours while Mandy slept trying to figure out to make everything right. He had let Brian slip away from him without fighting, he couldn't do that again.
He started from his deep thoughts when he heard the bedroom door open. Mandy slipped out, wearing a white sweater and long black skirt, a suitcase in each hand. Curt stood then, walking towards her.
"Mand, please. Can't we just talk it out?"
Mandy shook her head, stepping past him to pick up her purse.
"No. I'm sorry Curt, but I can't let myself get set up for more hurt. Not again."
Curt swallowed, walking up behind her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Look Mand, I know I fucked up. I'm sorry. After the show...all I could think about was Brian. You have to understand..."
"He was there" she stated numbly, subtly shrinking away as Curt blinked.
"What?"
"Brian. He was at the show. He stayed for most of your song, left before it was over though" she started heading towards the door when Curt grabbed her hand, suddenly angry.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
Mandy whipped around, eyes filled with anger and sorrow.
"Because I knew if I did, you'd try to run after him and I'd find you fucking. I didn't expect that you'd settle for some copycat" tears were streaming down her face, and she hastily rubbed a hand her face to cast them away.
"The fact that you asked why I didn't tell you...that should let you know why I have to leave. I'm always going to be second to him in your heart, and you know that."
Curt swallowed, shaking his head. He reached out, cuppping her face and pressing their foreheads together.
"I love him just like you do, Mand. But I know I can't have him. I love you" he pressed his lips agasint hers, feeling his skin go cold when Mandy backed away, sobbing.
"It's not enough Curt. Even if you can't have him...it's not fucking enough, knowing you want him more than you want me. I'm sorry" she fumbled with the doorknob for a moment before she threw the door open and ran out. Curt stood there for a moment in numb shock, stunned that he hadn't been able to make her see reason. Then, he walked into the kitchen, throwing open the fridge. He took out a beer, popped off the cap, and slunk into the living room. It was only after he'd taken several gulps of the bitter liquid that he finally let the anguish take over, sobbing out his heartbreak into the alcohol.
