Chapter 11
June 15, 1974-1:30 AM

James started abruptly from his sleep when he felt hands shaking him. He opened his eyes blearily, staring at Myra.
“What?”
“She’s back.”
He bolted then, running for the door. After a week of searching almost nonstop, he had all but given up hope of finding Mandy. When he came to the front room, his heart plummeted from his throat to his stomach when he saw a badly bloodied wolf lying on the floor, looking near dead. He knelt down and stroked her head.
“Mand?”
She gave a little whine, licking his hand weakly and then putting her chin back on her paws. James glanced up at Myra, eyes shining with worry.
“Is she going to be okay?”
“I don’t know. Rich shot ‘er up pretty good. ‘Course….” she smiled weakly.
“I guess I won’t dance around it with clever little things. Would you like to see your daughter?”
James’ face flushed and he stood up shakily.
“D-daughter? S-…I….”
Myra smirked.
“I’m guessin’ she was tryin’ to get back here to have ‘er, and just couldn’t make it. She was staggerin’ and carryin’ her when I saw her, barely managed to get up the steps ‘fore she collapsed like this.”
James swallowed, rubbing his shaking sweaty hands together.
“So…she’s like Mandy then?”
Myra nodded.
“If you want to see her, she’s in that basket by the stove.”
James trembled as he walked over to the tiny wood stove, kneeling down and brushing the blankets out of the way. Even though it was hard to think of this fluffy brown pup as his daughter, deep in his heart he felt an unbelievable surge of love when she tilted her head towards his hand. She whimpered and he stroked his fingers against her fur.
“Shh…it’s okay sweetheart, Daddy’s here…”

Mandy groaned when she woke up, feeling pain course through every part of her body. She tossed her head to the side, opening her eyes and sighing softly when she saw James sitting beside her.
“James…how….what happened?”
“Myra said you came here last night. You were….” he swallowed, gently rubbing his fingers against her hand.
“I thought I’d lost you.”
“Oh James…” she sat up as much as she could, kissing him.
“I wouldn’t let go that easy, you should know that.”
“Where were you? I’d been looking for you all over.”
“Hid out in some abandoned mine or something. I just came back to-“ her eyes lit up.
“Oh God, th-“
James smirked, kissing her forehead.
“She’s out in the kitchen.”
“Oh…is she all right? I wasn’t able to…all I remember is a helluva lotta blood.”
“She’s perfect.”
Mandy sighed softly, closing her eyes again.
“Thank God. I was so worried that she had gotten knicked by one of those assholes with their guns…”
“Guns?”
“I’m guessing Myra didn’t look me over very well.”
“Not really, no. She said she’d look when you changed back.”
“Mmm…oh God, I’m starting to regain feeling. Fuck, the asshole hit more times then I thought. Crap, I think there’s still a bullet in my leg that I didn’t get out. Could you take a look? Left one.”
James nodded and pulled back the blanket, swallowing tensely when he saw the bullet lodged in her leg.
“Yeah…what do you want me to do?”
“Hold my other hand whlie I dig it out.”
“Is that really a good idea?”
“Probably not, but I’m going to it anyway.”
James shook his head, grabbing her fingers when tossed the blankets aside, bending her leg so she could get a good look at her thigh. She dug the nails of her other hand into the flesh, gasping loudly as she dug out the bullet. As soon as she had, the door opened and Myra walked in, holding a blanketed bundle in her arms.
“Well I was wondering when you’d be up. How’re you doin’?”
“Peachy” Mandy rolled her eyes, blotting at the wound with one of the blankets.
“Now, since I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to hang onto consiouness, let me see my daughter.”
Myra smirked and walked over to the bed, gently placing the little girl in Mandy’s arms.
“Just holler if you need anything, all right?”
“Mmm-hmm” Mandy barely noticed as Myra left the room, she was too busy running her fingers all over the little girl’s body.
“Oh my God…she’s so beautiful…we’ll be beating the boys off with clubs when she’s older.”
James laughed a little, putting one hand on Mandy’s shoulder as he gazed at their daughter.
“Which reminds me…how are we going to get back to New York?”
“We’ll think about that later. Right now, I’m just glad to be here with you. Count your blessings.”
James smirked, kissing her neck.
“Yeah, guess you’re right.”
“Mmm…looks like this little ones tired out, not that I blame her. She’s had a rough first few days” she tenderly cradled the infant against her chest as she laid back down.
“Maybe while I sleep you should think of a name for her.”
“All right luv. You want me to stay here?”
Instead of speaking, Mandy moved over in the bed, even though it hurt like hell to do so. James shook his head.
“Subtle.”
“My middle name.”
He rolled his eyes and got in beside her, delicately wrapping his arms around her.
“I love you Mand.”
Before she could answer back, Mandy fell asleep. James sighed and tenderly kissed her cheek, stroking his fingers over his daughter’s hair before his eyelids got just too heavy and he closed them.
