AN: This chapter happens very, very fast. Because that’s how it came to us, it’s impossible for us to imagine Rich tactfully drawing it out or Mandy allowing him to do so. You’ll see what I mean in a minute.

Chapter 10
June 7, 1974-4:30 AM

Mandy woke up with a started, bolting up in a cold sweat and panting. For a minute, she was unsure as to what had scared her so and while she was trying to figure it out, James woke up and ran his hand up her back.
“You okay luv?”
Usually she would have found at least a little comfort in his touch, but this time she stood up and walked around the sleeping women to one of the windows. She looked out and a chill ran through her.
“Get out.”
James raised an eyebrow, walking over to her.
“What?”
“Get out. Things are going to get really bad really fast.”
James glanced outside, swallowing when he saw several men carrying guns led by Mandy’s father towards the barn. He wrapped his arms across her chest, pressing his lips against the side of her neck.
“You know I won’t leave you to fend for yourself.”
“I won’t be fending for myself. These girls have killed men before; they’ll do it again. I just don’t want you to get hurt because of me.”
“And I’m not going to risk you getting hurt. I’m staying.”
Mandy started to say something in return when the door fell to the ground. Immediately all the other women were awake and some were half changed, snarling at the men. Two of them were quickly shot and then Rich walked towards James and Mandy.
“Why don’t ya just come outside and talk t’ me fer a minute and we can get this all over with?”
Mandy swallowed tensely, gripping James’ hand as the other girls circled around, obviously wishing for Mandy to say yes so no more of them would die.
“You know I’d say yes in a heartbeat if it were just me Daddy.”
James winced a little as he felt curved claws in his flesh and saw the fur lining her neck. God, he hoped she knew what she was doing.
Rich shrugged.
“A’ight then” he turned and when Sophie got bold and jumped towards him with fangs bared, he shot her in the throat. The silver bullet quickly ate through the flesh and cut off her air and she fell as a corpse to the hard ground.
“Ready to talk now?”
James swallowed as Mandy’s fingers slid into his pocket, pulling out the pentagram he kept there as his own symbol of their informal marriage, pressing into his palm and then rapidly changing and bolting for the door. The other men fired, and James thought he saw red against the brown fur as he ran towards her. By then she had somehow managed to get out into the open plains, though she was considerably slower than usual.
James growled, grabbing Rich’s arm before any of the men could think to hurt him,
throwing him against the wall with a force that surprised even the usually violent women who were now tending to their wounds and which caused Rich to drop his gun.
“How the FUCK could you do that, you bastard! You could have just killed your own daughter!”
“That’s not mah daughter…that’s a monster.”
“The only monster I see here is you” he whispered. Without thinking about it for one second, James picked up the gun and placed it against Rich’s chin.
“I’m not giving you the option of living if she does this time. You’ve gone way too fucking far” he said, then quickly shot. He didn’t feel even the tiniest bit of guilt as Rich’s lifeless body fell to the ground, covered in blood and bits of brain. He turned around, glancing at the werewolf hunters and the werewolves.
“I’m going out to look for her” he muttered. The men nodded and quickly left themselves, not wanting to be around when someone reported the murder, and the women just changed, leaving their fallen lovers and comrades laying in the rotting building in shafts of moonlight.
