Chapter 8

Well this chapter took a bit because the muses had prepared to write it to Twinkle from Boys For Pele. Just when we all get into a good groove in this chap, we find out that the end of the song SKIPS! Thus, the girls sulked for a few hours until I managed to convince them that 1000 Oceans was a good substitute.

Chapter 8
May 20, 1974-11:00 PM

Mandy opened her eyes, staring up at the ceiling for a few moments before she realized she didn’t know where she was. She attempted to turn over and get up, but the slight movement caused a sharp dagger of pain to shoot through her and it was all she could do not to yell.
Fortunately, James walked into the room at that moment, a look of relief sinking onto his features.
“Thank God, you’re awake.”
“Mmm..” she attempted to get up again but he walked over then, putting his hand on her shoulder.
“Just relax. There’s no reason for you to get up and possibly hurt yourself more.”
“How long have I been out?”
“Five and a half hours.”
“Jesus…what…” and then she passed her fingers over the place where the pain was worst and felt the scar on her stomach. She swallowed tensely, remembering what had happened.
“Where are we?”
“Your aunt’s. She was waiting outside after…what your dad did.”
Mandy pressed her lips together, letting him brush his fingers through her hair as she pressed her face into the pillow.
“Is…is the…”
“Don’t know yet.”
Mandy squeezed her eyes shut, willing the tears to stay put. She inhaled deeply, letting his scent relax her a little as he leaned down and pressed his mouth to her neck.
“Don’t worry. I’m sure everything’ll be fine. It has been so far, right?”
She nodded tensely, shaking a little. She felt the mattress sink down and then his arms wrapped across her chest, face burrowed in her shoulder. He slid his hands up, frowning when he felt the tears on her face. He blindly wiped them away, kissing her ear.
“Hey…don’t cry. It’s going to be okay.”
She shook her head, letting out a tiny sob.
“What if it’s not? What if our luck’s finally run out?”
James sighed, gently caressing her face and then moving down to do the same to her neck.
“Don’t think like that luv. Think positive.”
She swallowed, closing her eyes and nodding a little.
“You’re right. I’m just…everything’s so fucked right now.”
“I know. But it doesn’t matter what your family thinks, as long as we have each other, right?”
She smirked, reaching a hand up to squeeze his in agreement when the door to the small bedroom opened and Myra walked in.
“Well, yer finally up.”
“Why’d you…how…”
“Please, people can hear when you an’ yer dad are fighin’ from a mile away.”
Mandy laughed softly.
“Yeah…what’d they-“
“They were still bickerin’ when Ah came to take you.”
“Oh.”
“Now, let’s get a look at that nasty ol’ cut. Can ya sit up?”
“Maybe” Mandy put her hand on the headboard, smirking a little when James put an arm
around her to help her stay upright. She noticed then that her shirt was torn down the middle and that the button had been ripped out of her jeans. Myra shrugged when she walked over and saw the look on her face.
“Needed t’ do as much as I could fer ya. Why yer still wearin’ such tight clothes I don’t know.”
Mandy laughed a little, wincing and unconsciously pressing her nails into James’ hand when Myra’s fingers passed over the wound.
“Well it’s not bleedin’ anymore, that’s somethin’. Still have to watch out for infection though.”
Mandy sighed, forcing herself to ask the question nagging at every part of her brain.
“What about the baby?”
“He didn’ cut ya that deep, hon. He just did it there to scare the crap outta both of ya. No way the little one could get even a nick, even if it was silver” Myra smirked as she saw the relief sink onto both their faces.
“Now, get some sleep, both of ya. In the morning we’ll figure out what yer gonna do.”
“What do you mean?”
“Rich may be an ass, but he’s not a dumb one. He knows what you are now, sug. Yer
gonna have to figure out what you’ll do if someone comes fer ya. But it can wait a few hours. Go to sleep.”
Then Myra walked out, shutting off the light. James sighed, nuzzling Mandy’s shoulder and running his fingers delicately down her side.
“Don’t worry about it luv. You know I won’t let anyone take you away from me.”
Mandy just sighed and turned over, snuggling up to him and going back to sleep
