Fluff and...well, more fluff
Well, the hen hatched out tweleve chicks. Number tweleve, however, hatched awhile later and the mom didn't get him time to warm up so we had to bring him in to recover from his hatching and he is now doing much better. Also, Bri approved chapter 1.
Chapter 1
Abeline, Texas-March 20, 1974-6:30 PM
“Ami honey!” Mandy involuntarily tensed as her mother walked up and hugged her.
“Well what’s the matter, ain’t ya happy to see me?”
“’Course I’m happy Ma, just tired. It was a long flight.”
“Well then Ah guess we’d best be gettin' home” Mary pulled back, wrinkling her nose when she saw James.
“Yer still with him?”
“Please Ma, don’t start now.”
Mary rolled her eyes and turned to lead them to the beat up truck. James wrapped his arm around Mandy’s shoulders, kissing her hair.
“It’s all right luv, you know I don’t care what she thinks and you shouldn’t either.”
“I know, I just wish she’d accept that I’m different.”
James smiled sadly, holding her close as they got into the truck. He heard Mary click her tongue as Mandy snuggled up to him but chose to ignore her, holding his lover close as she drifted off to sleep. If he had to stay around these people, they sure as hell wouldn’t keep treating her like this.
“Mand?”
“Mmm…”
James laughed a little as she got closer to him. He slid a hand up and down her back, feeling the hairs stick up slightly at the tickling.
“We’re here.”
Mandy groaned and got up, arching her spine slightly and sighing.
“Shoulda known. This place still has a smell that makes me sick” she muttered. James shook his head, opening the door and taking her arm to help her out.
“You ready for this?”
”Ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.”
He kissed her softly, brushing his thumb across her lips after their mouths parted.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be there the whole time, and if he takes one step out of line-“
“You’ll forget that he could easily be your father-in-law and dismember him, I know” she kissed his nose, biting it playfully and walked in with him.
James immediately regretted coming when they stepped into the old farmhouse. Not only was the place noisy, but he could now understand why it would make Mandy sick. Even without her sensitive sense of smell, he was nearly gagging. Cigarette smoke, liquor, sweat and cooking all mingled to it nearly impossible to breathe. Surprisingly, though, Mandy didn’t seem affected by it. She noticed James’ look of discomfort and smiled.
“I adjusted to it, so it’s not as bad as it would be otherwise. C’mon, lets try to sneak up to my room before he notices.”
James nodded, letting her grab his hand and weave him through a bunch of drunk men who he supposed were her family members towards a staircase. Just as they were going to start going up, a loud voice broke through the chatter.
“So yer back not two minutes and already sneakin’ around, eh Ami?”
James trembled as he saw the hairs shoot up on Mandy’s neck and her fingers wrap around the banister. He tried to touch her to get her to calm down, but she shrugged him off. She turned sharply, storming through the den to the kitchen where Rich was sitting at the table with a beer. She slammed her hands down on the table with a strength that surprised everybody except James, who was carefully creeping forward in case something happened.
“No, I’m just incredibly tired and wanted to get to bed as soon as possible. Got a problem with it?”
“Just with who yer goin’ to bed with. Ah can’t believe yer still with that nancy boy.”
“You seem to have forgotten that ‘nancy boy’ kicked your ass a couple months ago.”
“Watch yer tongue girl. Yer under mah roof again, so yer gonna respect me.”
“I’m not being disrespectful, I’m just telling the truth.”
“Really? All right then, if yer in the mood for truth tellin’, how ‘bouts tellin’ me about that bulge under yer coat.”
“Daddy please, not now…”
Rich stood up and tore Mandy’s leather jacket off, shaking his head.
“Left hand.”
When she stood as if she hadn’t heard him, Rich yanked her left arm up with a force that made her hit her hip against the table. James clenched his fist, hoping Mandy knew what she was doing so he wouldn’t be forced to do something he’d regret.
Rich looked at her hand for a second, then dropped it, shaking his head.
“You disgust me.”
James watched with growing anger as Mandy teared up, biting her lip. She swallowed tightly, trying to look strong and cold when she was ready to break down.
“Well you disgust me too. In fact, I’m going to bed before I throw up” she grabbed her jacket and walked as quickly as she could to James. The second she got to his arms, Rich started laughing and she began to sob into James’ shoulder. He gently rubbed her back, kissing her hair.
“Shh. Don’t pay him any mind luv, he’s just an ignorant redneck…”
“Just…just help me upstairs, okay?”
James nodded, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as they walked up to her bedroom. The second they crossed the threshold, she started taking off her clothes. Unlike most men, James knew immediately that she wasn’t trying to erase the pain with sex, but with something much more primal. He took off his shirt and laid down on the bed, sighing tiredly when he felt the warm fur against his chest and the wet nose nuzzling his neck.
“And what do you propose we do if your family comes in?”
In answer, Mandy just heaved a big sigh and closed her eyes. James shook his head, glancing out the window. They were going to be staying until July, since they’d both decided it would be nice to spend the summer out of the city. Meaning they would have four months of her family to wistand with forced grins…and four full moons that would have to be spent in suffocating secrecy.
