Chapter 12

September 10, 1973-5:30 AM

Things were quiet for a few weeks. Then that morning in early September, things started to change.
Mandy yawned, stretching her back lazily. She heard James mumbling and lifted her head from the pillow to listen.
“Mmm….that’s it baby…”
She growled softly, incredibly turned on by the look on his face. Unable to resist, she leaned forward and bit his nipple.
He yelped, waking up to see her laughing hysterically. He rolled his eyes.
“Ha ha, very funny” and then he rolled on top of her.
“You’ll get yours” he growled, and started tickling her stomach.
Mandy shrieked, halfheartedly trying to get away. Then after a few minutes it slowly changed from tickling to snuggling. He nuzzled his face into her neck, sweeping a hand through her hair and whispering softly, breath comfortingly warm against her skin.
“You smell like twilight” he whispered, not knowing why he’d said it. A shiver ran through her, thought it was quickly replaced with a tingly warmth when he nibbled her shoulder and started kissing his way down until he reached the miniscule puffiness at her waist. He gently nuzzled the tiny bulge, smiling sadly when he sat up.
“I’d better get ready to go.”
Mandy nodded, reaching up to touch his face and hair. He hadn’t gone to the studio since the shooting, and even though she knew he needed to go, she just wanted to lie in bed with him, wrestling and snuggling for the rest of the day. But she let him get off the bed, rolling over onto her stomach and watching with a pleasured smile and sharpening teeth as he dressed. He looked up from buttoning his shirt, raising an eyebrow.
“What?”
“Mmm, you’re delicious, that’s all.”
He laughed, shaking his head.
“You getting up?”
“In a couple minutes, maybe. The bed still smells like you.”
He smirked, walking over and kissing her hair.
“All right luv, I’ll go start breakfast.”
“All right” she watched him walk out, rolling over onto her back. Just as she was standing up, she jerked her legs back to her chest as a quick pain rolled through her. She’d changed last night, so that couldn’t be it. Just aftershocks, the animal in her begging to be let out for another five minutes. Yeah.

Mandy tightened her fingers around her pencil, biting the eraser as another weird spasm came on her. She dropped her half-finished drawing of two wolves running together, walking to the bathroom to look through the medicine cabinet to see what might help. Then she felt something damp between her legs. The colour rushed form her skin as she gingerly slid her pajama pants down, heart fluttering when she saw blood. Not a lot, just enough to scare. She swallowed, turning around to walk out and phone an ambulance when the pain came again, stronger than ever, and she collapsed.

“James, you okay man?”
James looked up at Curt, nodding.
“’Course.”
“You look like someone just told you you’ve got cancer or something.”
James shrugged, just as confused at the shock of fear that had run through him as Curt was.
“Feeling a little off. I think we should call it a day.”
“All right” Curt picked up his coat and walked out with James to his car. The hair on James’ neck bristled slightly as Curt got in, but he didn’t protest. Somehow he knew he had to get back to the flat as soon as possible.
“Man, you sure you’re all right? You’re driving like a demon.”
James didn’t say anything, worriedly quiet until they pulled up to the flat. He dashed up the steps, opening the door. He peered in.
“Mand? I’m home…” he walked through the front room, peering around. His heart plummeted when he heard a crying, whimpering sound. He dashed towards it, leaving a very confused Curt standing in the doorway.
He walked towards the bathroom, nervously shoving open the half-open door.
“Ma-“ he stopped with a gasp when he saw her curled up on the floor, head down and arms around her waist, blood around her legs.
“Holy shit…” he stepped out the door, a nervous sweat coating his skin.
“Curt, call an ambulance” he was glad when Curt listened, since he was too scared to yell. Then he got back into the bathroom, kneeling down beside her.
“Mand? I’m here luv, everything’s going to be okay” he said, stroking her face. A few tears filled his eyes when she whimpered again, pressing her nose and tongue against his palm.

Mandy woke up to the sound of beeping and people talking, a harsh white glare hitting her eyes. She glanced at her hand, mildly relived when it was only clawed. She glanced around, realizing with a stab of fear that she was in a hospital. Shit. Had they drawn blood? And if they had, could that tell them what she was?
She vaguely felt someone’s hand on hers, barely hearing a woman’s soft voice.
“Miss Slade?” Mandy tried to pull away but found it hurt too much to move. She whimpered and the woman stroked her hair.
“You need to lie still as much as possible. You had a miscarriage, but you’re going to be fine.”
Tears filled her eyes and she buried her face in the pillow to muffle her soft cries. The woman murmured something and walked away. Then she smelt something through the salt of her tears. James. Oh God, he must be heartbroken…
She heard him sit down and felt his hand on her neck, massaging softly.
“I’m so sorry Mand. Maybe if I’d come home sooner…” he whispered and a pang went through her when she heard the guilt in his voice. She whimpered as she twisted around, but in a few minutes she was facing him.
“Don’t blame yourself. It could have happened even if we’d been in the same room all day. These things just happen” pretend you’re calm, for his sake. You can change and run and cry when you get home.
He sighed, shaking his head.
“Don’t be strong for me, Mand. You don’t have to pretend to be a heartless Amazon, not now.”
She glanced up at him with shining eyes, the faintest of smiles fluttering across her face before she started sobbing. James wrapped his arms around her, gently rocking and kissing her. He didn’t say anything stupid about how they could try for their own child, or how she’d get over it. He just held her, letting her whimper and whine like the wounded animal she was, stoically holding back his own tears.
