fft, due to my civics homework hiding until Sunday night, lost internet priviliages over teh weekend which is probably why Char isn't on, blegggh. Finished chapter 1 of Sing Our Freedom before losing compy, though.

"That girl was there, wasn't she?"
James looked up at his sister, who was brushing her young daughter's hair.
"Why would you think that?"
"The smile on your face, dear brother. You only have it the nights Lord B'rmighm brings that dancer of his."
"Meandy" he murmured dreamily.
"Pardon?"
"That's her name. Meandy."
"And how did you find this out? I've never heard B'rmighm call her anything but words our maids should not be hearing."
"She told me."
"The wine got to you, brother. That girl doesn't speak. She's simple. Any girl would have to be to do the things that man makes her do."
"She's not. She's just scared."
"How do you know?"
"She sat next to me. She looked like a frightened pup, Reac. He's scared the soul right out of her, I saw it in her eyes."
"Then why do you want to marry her?"
James' eyes flew open and his sister smiled sadly.
"Everyone who sees you look at her knows she is the only one you want, it is no use hiding it."
James sighed.
"I see something in her. If I could just get her from him, buy her if I had to, I could bring it out. He's just hidden it beneath those costumes and those bloody dances."
"And what if there was nothing else? What if she is simple, what if this is the only way she could lead her life? How could she rule beside you then?"
"I would take care of her. I'd give up any title for her."
"You barely know her."
"I know."
"Then how can you be so willing to give up so much for a girl who's name you just found out tonight?"
"You should know, sister. Your child shows you do."
Reachal petted her daughter's hair, sighing.
"Blind love ruined me."
"The things Mother has made me see have already ruined me. Maybe I should close my eyes and trust my open heart."
Reachal rolled her eyes.
"I'll remind the servants to keep you away from the spirits from now on."
But James wasn't listening now. His eyes were closed and he was dreaming. Dreaming of Meandy.

"Girl!"
Meandy lifted her head up, forcing herself not to sigh as the Master called. Five years and he rarely called her by her name. She often wondered why people thought her the simple one and not him.
As she walked through the hall to his bedchamber, the answer came back to her as it always did. She had to be simple to stay alive. It was amazing Lord B'rmighm had taken her, kept her from the executioner's axe. Many lords took on girls who had committed small crimes, adultery and the like. But her crime...
"What took you?"
Meandy knelt down, looking up at B'rmighm's smug face.
"Forgiveness m'lord."
He laughed at her simple words, knowing she was capable of saying something much more eloquent and snapping if it weren't for her situation. He moved the bedclothes aside, revealing that he was, as usual, quite bare. She bit her tongue and stood up, peeling off her dress as she did. When she got onto the bed and straddled him, her mind went off to a better place like it always did when she was forced to do this. But this time it was not to the pretty red haired girl she'd sinned with, but to the youngest of the Worthin sons. James. He had been kind to her in a way none of the other men were. All the others assumed that because she was a slave, she was a slave to all of them. He had seen her as a person who just happened to be in a bad place. She imagined that it was him beneath her. His soft hands stroking up and down her body. In her hair, on her lips.
Suddenly her body seized up and she screamed, shaking. As she fell back onto the bed, her Lord still inside her, a million thoughts raced through her mind. What had happened? He'd never done that to her before. It had always been so drab to do this with him. But this time...
A shy smile crossed her lips as she thought about it. What all the women who really wanted to be with Lord B'rmighm whispered about the morning after. The quaking and shaking of pleasure that usually only the lord experienced. And then she didn't care when he took her again, her only thought being that the mere dream a man with a kind heart had made her feel the way only women had just started to before.

Also got an idea for a new original fiction story (more on that as it develops) Annd.... something happened today that I was going to tell Char, but I'll just put in in a locked entry.
